Jabal e Nur is the mountain on which the Cave of Hira is located. The Historic Cave of Hira is the one Where Prophet (PBUH) receive his First Revelation.
The JabalNur (Jabal Al-Nur) Mountain also known as the “Mountain of Light” or “Hill of Illumination”. The Cave of Hire is located on the top, at the height of 634 meters of this mountain. The Cave of Hira is 4 kilometers away from Holy Kaaba. This place is famous because Prophet Mohammad (SAW) used to visit this cave whenever he was in search of solitude and a spent quite long time in meditation and deep thinking. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was blessed with the First Revelation (Holy Quran) from Allah (SAT) and the Quran was first revealed to him. The calm and peaceful nature of the cave of Hira gave SAW an opportunity to think quietly and meditate far from the busy streets of Makkah City. And so, soon, Jabal Al-Hira became Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ultimate retreat. It requires at least 2 hours of climbing to reach Cave Hira, although, it is one of the most frequently visited Ziyarat Place in Makkah
Mohammad (SAW) used to climb the Jabal Al-Nour Mountain quite often, seeking solitude. The Holy Prophet (SAW) would meditate inside the cave of Hira, withdrawing himself from the seclusions of the world and devoting himself to the true light consisting of long vigils and prayers.
It was during the month of Ramadan (610 CE) that one night when the 40 years old, Prophet Muhammad PBUH was in deep meditation in the cave of Hira, somewhere around the Tahajjaud time, Angel Jibreel (AS) in the form of a human visited him with a piece of silk brocade in his hand.
The Angel asked Prophet Muhammad PBUH to “Read!” Upon which Prophet Muhammad PBUH replied, “I cannot read,” Angel Jibreel (AS) then took hold of him a second time and pressed him until he couldn’t endure it any longer.
Soon after letting him go, Angel Jibreel (AS) once again asked him to “Read!” to which Prophet Muhammad PBUH gave the same reply. The angel once again embraced Prophet Muhammad PBUH until he reached his limit of endurance and said, “Read!” However, even for the third time, Prophet Muhammad PBUH gave the same answer “I cannot read.”
Angel Jibreel (AS), then on Allah SWT’s command, released the following revelation: “Read in the name of your Lord, the Creator. He Who created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Bounteous. Who taught by the Pen, taught man what he knew not.” [Surah Al Alaq, 96:1-5]
These were the first verses of the Holy Quran revealed to him. Prophet Muhammad PBUH then recited the words after Angel Jibreel (AS) and said, “It was as though the words were written on my heart.
Prophet Muhammad PBUH turned pale and was trembling by the shock of the experience and feared that he had been possessed. While climbing down the cave of Hira, when he was in the midway of the mountain, Prophet Muhammad PBUH heard the voice of Angel Jibreel (AS) saying, “
O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of God, and I am Jibreel.”
